A New Beginning
Who Am I?
For those who don’t know me, I am Dr. David Russell Mosley. I have a PhD in theology from the University of Nottingham and currently teach literature, theology, and philosophy at a Catholic, classical high school in the Inland Northwest.
I’ve been writing for a long time now. I once had a Xanga, I was friends with Tom, and my band had an angelfire website, which my older Millennial and Gen X friends will be able to recognize as an example of ancient internet social media. The truth is, I love to write, so I thought now would be a good time to try yet another digital writing platform.
Since my early days of writing, I’ve published 5 books, three of them collections of poetry, and have written for both print and digital magazines including U.S. Catholic, Ekstasis, Forma, Dapple Things, and more.
What’s this newsletter about?
My primary focus is seeing the world around us more clearly with the help of poetry and literature. When describing their joint poetic project, Samuel Taylor Coleridge wrote that Wordsworth’s poems were meant to help clear away the “film of familiarity”. They wanted their readers to understand that the world is more than what habit and custom have trained us to see it as. Today, I add to that the need to clear away the lens of reductive materialism. Too often we’re taught to view the world as a random collection of atoms and chemical reactions that have no inherent meaning. Well, I reject this view of reality and think that good literature, good poetry, and even good customs can help us live out a deeper understanding of the real.
Of course, this deeper understanding has its source and as its end Christ. And so, that’s what you’ll find here, regular newsletters looking at literature, poetry, and culture through the lens of faith so we can see through the haze that has built up around us and maybe, if we’re lucky, see something even more real.
For now, I’m keeping this newsletter free, but I may be adding paid content later. In fact, right now, I’m writing a short story, which may become a series of them, about a Catholic priest who travels around the world combatting creatures like goblins, water horses, vampires, and more. Those stories could easily find their way into a paid newsletter.
That said, if you want to support my writing, you can do so through Buy Me a Coffee (see the link below).
Thanks for reading and I’ll see you next time!
