Friends,
Allow me to apologize for the lack of posts over the last few weeks. In the past, when I’ve failed to keep up with posting, it’s usually because I’m down in some way, but this time the reason for the pause in posting is a good one. I’ve been writing a book! I wish I could say it was the book I’ve been contracted to write, but I have been struggling for several years now to write that book. I pray this summer I may be able to finally work on it in earnest.
Last spring and into the summer, as some of you know, I wrote a fantasy novel about a high school teacher who comes back to his home town to teach only to discover that a traumatic experience he had as a boy actually happened and the effects of it are dragging him into Faërie. I finished that book at the end of July and have sent it off for consideration (I should be hearing back soon so say some prayers for that).
August through October saw me trying to get back into working on my Medieval Cosmos book, but I couldn’t get into it. I tried to write a follow up Fr. Elwin story, but that fell short too. Then I had an idea. What if the Inklings (or a fictional group remarkably like them) encountered a real fairy, not of the Victorian nor quite of the Tolkienian variety, but a mischievous, human stealing fairy (like those from folklore and Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell)? What would that mean for them as writers? For them as Christians? Well, I’ve been working on that since just before Thanksgiving. And I’ve been making great progress. Since November 24 I’ve written just over 41,000 words or roughly 152 printed pages.
My goal is for this book to be about 80000 words, so I’m halfway there. And since I’m on Christmas Break, I have some more time to dedicate to writing, meaning I’m hoping to finish a draft of the book before the break is over. Surprisingly, this is doable … I think. In order to find out, however, all other writing needs to take a back seat. This is now my full time job (other than being a husband and father) for the next 2 weeks.
So say some prayers as I work toward this overly ambitious goal. Hopefully, I’ll be back to posting at least once a week after the new year, though I may pop in to give you an update on this book.
Until then, have a happy Christmas!
Sincerely,
David
