To go with the theme of Ordinary Time, here’s a poem from my book Liturgical Entanglements which reflects on the nature of time itself, especially as understood by the greek word kairos a word used for appointed times or seasons. Enjoy.
“Kairos” For everything there is a time A season proper for its execution. But what about this ordinary season of mine, A monotony without a resolution? Spinning between the dishes, laundry, work, I am a top twirling in its place. And yet I do not stop, I dare not shirk These mundane duties of mine in a mundane space. But is there anything that’s ordinary, Anything beneath me, below my station? Isn’t just to be extraordinary, Even the smallest molecule in creation? For everything there is its proper season, And we are ordered by divine Reason.
